We all have our own starting point's with technology

After watching Ivette bayo speech, it made me take a step back, and reflect how technology has taken over our lives. As fortunate as I am to have a phone, computer, tv/etc it’s sometimes easy to forget people around us may not have the same resources or access to these devices. Ivette Bayo had made a good point about technology “Everyone is starting somewhere” (Ivette Bayo). That made me reflect back on my own personal life. Being a first-generation college student in my family, with my parents and grandparents never even graduating high school has proven the advantage I've had over my family. Within the last 20 years technology has advanced drastically, and sometimes hard to keep up with. Being in my late 20’s, looking back at my childhood I can remember computer’s, tv’s and cellphones always being in my life. Having those devices was normal to me and easy to use. However, for my parent’s/grandparents it’s been an ongoing struggle. Still this day, my parents, and grandparents ask me for technology help all the time. Even though they may be asking me simple thing’s, it’s not so easy for them. I come from a deep understanding that technology was never a part of my grandparent's culture, to them it’s like a foreign language. I have to remember they did not have the same access like I did. It’s important to be mindful that many people around the world still don’t even use technology, and we should respect people’s decisions regarding using it. It’s easy to scroll through your social media apps, and get out of touch with reality. I’m guilty of it my own self, we’ve been programmed to work this way. However, it’s important to remember not everyone around you lives their life through a screen, and we shall always respect one’s choices.

  1. Hi Salina,

It's crazy how technology affects our daily lives. On the other hand, I appreciate the technology that connects me with my family in Thailand so they can facetime/talk to their only grandson. :)
